(shay nan blahn) Chenin Blanc is the principle grape of parts of the Loire in France where it produces all styles of wine from crisply dry to the famous sweet wines of Vouvray. It even sparkles.
Chenin really found fame, though, when it left its natural home and went to places like South Africa where it represents the bulk of plantings for white grapes and produces fresh tropically fruity wines at a brilliantly good price. They are totally different from their French relations. What winemakers in hot countries prize most about Chenin is its ability to hang on to its high acidity level.
This keeps the wine fresh. Although the finest examples particularly from the Loire age brilliantly, most inexpensive Chenin should be drunk within a year of bottling.
