| (Shar-doe-nay) Classic white wine grape of Burgundy
The world's most popular grape. Why? Well from the winemakers point of view its great because its easy to grow which qualifies it to be a contender in the first place. By the time you have harvested it and got it into the winery it is also robustly adaptable. It will produce wines of many styles depending on where it is grown from the crisp green appley style of Chablis, to huge, fruity, tropical flavours from Australia. Wherever it is grown its flavours are fulsome enough to make it good as a blending wine. It is one of the major varieties used to make Champagne. On the other hand when mixed with a high yielding, low character, cheap variety such as Colombard a proportion of Chardonnay is assertive enough to add character while keeping the costs down. It also loves to be oak matured and will age well in the bottle too.
From the customers point of view it has almost become a Brand Name in its' own right. They may simply ask for it by name.
Flavours - Can vary from Green Apples, Lemons, Butter, Nuts, Toast, Biscuit, Cream, Pineapple, Citrus, Mangoes and other tropical fruits |
